Dr. Visit

Well this morning I took Payton to the doctor and she weighs 11 lbs 10 oz!!! Can you believe it?? My baby is getting SO big!! I took her in to talk with the nurse practitioner about her spitting up in the night. She does have acid reflux. It isn't too bad at this point. She told me to try feeding her less and maybe more frequent through the day. My first thought was this will not work for my child. She has been eating 5 oz every 3 to 4 hours since she was 3 weeks old. (I know that is a lot but she is a big baby and she is a hungry baby) But, the nurse seems to think that if I feed her even just 4 oz then it would help with her spitting up. So today I have only fed her 4 oz verses the 5 oz and she seemed to be satisfied. So I am hoping this will help. She also said to sit her up more while we are feeding her, not to lay her down until after 30 minutes of feeding her, burp her after ounce (which I try to do anyways), and make sure she is not getting too much air in the bottle during her feeding. So we will see how this works for us!!

I'm glad she gave you a lot of advice! Both of the nurse practitioners there are great! They spend so much time with you. Which one did you see?

Jackson didn't have acid reflux (that I knew off...), but he spit up A LOT. I remember having to teach myself that his stomach is only so big and once it is "full" it "overflows" which is spit up.

Once he was in his crib, I elevated his mattress just a little bit by folding a few receiving blankets and placing them under one end of the mattress. (not too many or he would slide to the bottom) This prevented him from laying so flat which helped with the spit up.

Also- maybe check your nipples....are they the "slow" ones or the "variable" ones? The slow ones may help her to eat slower and swallow less air. Also- maybe just use the 4 oz bottles instead of the 9oz bottles because the 9oz can hold more air. Just some suggestions...but then again...I really don't know what I am talking about!

Needless to say I don't know much about it, but sounds like both Kelli and Marla gave some good suggestions. Hopefully all this will relieve her and you too from this spitting up. She is thriving though and that is great! Little cutie baby!
